New Lawn Care and Maintenance
Congratulations! Your lawn has been installed by one of Green Bay’s most experienced landscape companies. After years of helping homeowners install their lawns, we have developed the following list of recommendations to assist you in making your lawn the envy of your neighbors. The condition and appearance of your lawn is now entirely up to you, and with the following tips, you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully landscaped home.
- Watering should start immediately after seeding. Water thoroughly, especially in corners and off-shaped areas. It is better to water multiple times per day than to soak the lawn once per day. Water only to the point of saturation, once the water starts to run-off, the ground has reached its saturation point.
- Begin watering with the sprinkler farthest away from the house. Each time you reposition move the sprinkler closer towards the house. This will help to eliminate puddling. If you are planning to purchase a sprinkler, look for a good quality impulse sprinkler. This style is the most reliable in providing even water coverage.
- After the grass has grown to a height of 5” to 6”, you should plan to begin mowing. Be sure the mower blades are sharp, and the height adjustment is set to a cut of 3 to 3.5”. You do not need to remove the straw, it will naturally decompose. Lawn should be bagged to avoid clumps.
- After 3-4 weeks, or when the lawn starts to fill nicely (depends on the growing season), water to a depth of 4-6”. This encourages a good deep root system. Experts say optimum growth requires an inch of water a week throughout the growing season. This is equal to watering 3 times per week for 30 minutes each time.
- Weeds are a natural progression in the establishment of a new lawn. Do not apply weed killer until you have mowed your lawn 8 to 10 times.
- Your new lawn rapidly uses up the fertilizer applied at installation. A yellowing of the grass tells you when more fertilizer is needed. Call us for recommendations on current and future fertilizing needs.
